Llama Trek

Lachlan spent ten days this summer at camp in the mountains of North Carolina. This island boy reports that he had an "awesome" time.

In addition to a three day llama trek, the campers enjoyed rock climbing (Lachlan loves to climb), a ropes course, camping, and white water rafting (Lachlan's favorite).

He returned home just before his tenth birthday, happy to be back on the island (he was homesick only for about an hour the first afternoon), and looking forward to camp again next summer.

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is an article about the Ocracoke Crab Festival which was held each May from 1984 to 1989. You can read it here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news072114.htm

Sounds like a great camp! He might also be interested in the Great Smokey Mtns. Institute at Tremont. Salamanders, hiking, wilderness, ecology etc.

Be interesting to pick Lachlan's brain about his thoughts on life and the world "off" the island--just little things.

From here in SW PA, where the terrain varies from gently rolling hills to plunging valleys, I was amused when friends who'd relocated back here, and others just visiting--from the flat lands of Toledo and also from Buffalo--noted:

    - how much harder it is to ride bicycles here where the terrain is not ALL FLAT, ALL THE TIME,

    - and how quickly my friend remembered that she had to keep one foot on her shopping cart while unloading groceries in the parking lot lest the cart roll away.

Just the little unrecognized aspects of day-to-day life that we all take for granted in our own little corners of the world.

As always, Philip, thanks for keeping us up to date on happenings from YOUR little corner of the world.
